Roller-Coaster called Air Force

Ahh the roller coaster which is life in the military.

So two days ago I told you that we had an extra week tapped onto the length of time which *R* was going to be gone. And then yesterday happened.

Turns out *R* had more severe problems than we initially thought. His lab work came back yesterday and the doctor recommended he go home and receive immuno-therapy for his allergies before returning to SERE school. Apparently because he's been so limited on what food he can eat, he's been losing weight and he might not have enough fat or protein in his body to make it through the training. Something about his body breaking down his muscles and it can damage his kidneys. They called it "ribdo", anyone know what that is?

Blech. My poor boy.

-HOWEVER-

The awesome, wonderful, really exciting news is that I get to see him tomorrow!!!

The Air Force is sending him back to Texas, but about 8 hours after he lands in Texas, he is turning around and flying up to Iowa to see ME! My awesome father used his frequent flyer miles to get him a last minute ticket. YAY!

So after Thanksgiving he will head back to San Antonio and to out process and then come to Georgia! He could be here as soon as December 5th!

The bad news is that he'll have to go back and do survival school all over again sometime. Ahh well, such is life! I get to see my husband!

I'm really nervous about how these allergies may affect us/him in the future. Especially how the military may react. It seems as though they are being very supportive and people have been very good about it. I guess I'm just always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Does anyone else ever feel like that?

On a positive note, yesterday was our one month anniversary! Woo Hoo! Of course we've only gotten to spend 7 days together during that month. But gosh darn it, they were WONDERFUL!

That is awesome that he gets to come home and I hope this treatment will make him feel 100x better.

food allergies suck. especially when they have a hard time getting them figured out and under control. dash-1 has that problem at first, he was underweight from the combo of the gastro problem and the allergies but at the time we didn't know which was causing which or what the whole deal was. I'm sure you have great doctors and ours is at Walter Reed which is hardly in your backyard (and its army and you all are AfF although we are marines so who knows) but if you ever wanted a second opinion or what not she is who I would go to. Dr. Smith at WR, shes the head Allergy dr. and shes GREAT.

GOOD LUCK!

It's rhabdomyolysis and it's when your body starts breaking down muscle to feed itself which your kidneys no likey and if it goes on too long it can make your kidneys fail and then everything else goes and it's bad bad bad.
We see it a lot in older people who fall and aren't found for awhile and have been lying in one position for awhile...

Good grief! I am so glad the AF is being supportive, sending him home for medical treatment, and then allowing him to go back to SERE. I hope this whole mess gets worked out!

I had a feeling this wasn't over yet. Medical problems in SERE are a big deal. And rabdo is also a problem with people who crossfit/workout far beyond what they should. It's pretty damn serious. The athletes I've seen that happen to basically didn't take care of themselves and were hospitalized for a week or two. It can be quite deadly. The acids/globin released while working out start to eat your muscles and can cause serious kidney damage.

I'm sorry he had to leave after the halfway point in all that because now he knows how much it sucks and will have to do it again. But at least he's safe, geting better and will spend your first married holiday together.

By the way, any idea when they can get him back to sere? I would hate for this to cut into christmas for you guys.

Oh no! That's awful! Well at least you guys get to be together now and enjoy your time with each other. I would think the AF would be supportive of his allergies and try and get him help. From my experience it seems like the military is really picky when it comes to those things when people first try to enlist, but once they're already a member the problem doesn't seem to be as big of an issue. But then again, you never really know with them now do you? Happy Thanksgiving!

Umm... YES!! We're having to go through the MedBoard process now, with McStudly's Crohns, and we just found out that he can't go fastrack, which means a bigger possibility of being discharged. Ugh! Is it so wrong to want to serve your country? Jemini crickets, people. Just let us be! Hmph!!

But wow - SO glad you get to see him!! You definitely need to enjoy your honeymoon phase. It's the best! Hopefully it'll never end for you guys. :-)
